Speak for Yourself received generally positive reviews from critics. A reviewer from About.com praised it as "a roller coaster ride of beauty and head pounding intensity." However, Pitchfork's David Raposa offered a more mixed assessment, noting that Heap "nervously flits between these two poles, envisioning a world where Sarah McLachlan, Shirley Manson, and Björk do each other's hair and sing into hairbrushes."

Commercially, the album achieved significant success, selling over 431,000 copies in the United States by August 2009 and attaining Gold status in Canada. The single "Hide and Seek" gained particular acclaim, selling 647,000 copies in the U.S.

In 2012, Speak for Yourself was re-released digitally in deluxe, standard, and instrumental editions by Sony Music. The deluxe version includes 11 instrumental tracks and the B-side "Cumulus."
