Impaled (1997) - Devourment

Released in 1997, Impaled is the debut demo by American death metal band Devourment. This three-track demo laid the foundation for the band's influential presence in the brutal death metal scene.

Tracklist:

  1. Choking on Bile
  2. Shroud of Encryption
  3. Festering Vomitous Mass

The lineup for this demo featured Wayne Knupp on vocals, Brian "Brain" Wynn on guitars, Mike Majewski on bass, and Brad Fincher on drums. The recording was produced by former and future guitarist Braxton Henry.

Impaled was initially released on cassette by Corpse Gristle Records. Over the years, it has seen various reissues, including a 7" vinyl release in 2021 by the same label.

Musically, the demo is characterized by inhuman guttural vocals, gravity-blasted tin-can snares, and bone-shattering guitars composed of slow slams and ruthless grinds. Tracks like "Choking on Bile" have become classics, showcasing the band's early commitment to crafting some of the most brutal and uncompromising death metal of their time.

Impaled is considered a pivotal release in Devourment's discography, marking the beginning of their journey in the extreme metal genre.
